Higher order thinking, metacognition etc. is preventative medicine with regard to protecting an individual from believing bullshit. BS takes hold in lieu of this. Not as deterministic as the title suggests though. If we cared to educate our citizenry instead of offering bread, circus, bite-sized data and teaching to the test, cognisance could be fostered. Sociological explainations where sociological explanations are due imo.
