Probably the first life was a self-replicating protein, that evolved an RNA to be where it stores the blueprints of how to reproduce those proteins. Then, the RNA evolved self-replication.
RNA eventually became dominant. The same process happened with DNA.
This process is called the Revolutionary Phenotype. It's more detailed than that, but the book covers it.
