For example if I claim we live in a patriarchy and that women are being oppressed and kept out of STEM, I can test this claim. I look into oppressive Islamic countries like Iran, and they have more women in STEM than any other country. Paradox!
For another example, consider racist hiring practices. Women are just as capable as men, you see. Recruiters see female names and, due to misogyny, they refuse to hire women. Test the claim. Redact names and hide all references to gender. Then hiring rates by gender should reach unity. Turns out men are hired even more disproportionately! Paradox! Adjust hypothesis and say names must be included.
