Unlike black holes there's not much talk going about this.
In a nutshell, if black holes are like punctures in spacetime, these things are like cracks in spacetime.
These are some facts I could gather about them:
>a cosmic string is extremely thin (near 1D) but very long (spans across the universe).
>a cosmic string is extremely massive. 1km is as heavy as earth (and remember, their length spans across the universe)
>a cosmic string moves extremely fast, loops around itself often and obviously causes gigantic gravitational waves as it does so
>at least one is predicted to exist in our observable universe.
How fucked are we should these things exist? They could literally slice through a galaxy and wreak havoc, scatter all its stars thus completely destroy it. Imagine if it sliced through earth though?
