fair enough, but why do they view human babies and humans in general as one of their own? forgive me for sounding stupid, but newborn dogs don't have the innate instinct to protect humans do they?

As the guy said they are pack animals. Wild dogs are a big fucking problem where I'm from, they are very feral. Still they are better than american shitbulls.

Dogs, like all mammals, are social creatures who operate best in packs. This only works if a minority of them are leaders (alphas), whilst a majority of them are followers. Dogs, like all mammals, are programmed to follow their alpha. Humans asserted themselves as an alpha for a dog to follow. It's why when you train a dog, you need to be assertive and dominate it.

Rarely seen a modern dog be protective of anything other than it's snacks, perhaps some breeds are more protective than others.

The dog in the OP is just playing, the guy would need full protective gear to do that if the dog was actually trained to defend.

Dogs have a much keener pack mentality than humans. When I was a kid I constantly fought my older brother. When that happened, the dog would always take my side and attack my brother - these weren't serious attacks however, the dog made sure to just tear clothing. Here's the kicker though - the dog actually respected my brother way more, it obeyed him much much more than me. It just believed it is right to take the weaker pack member's side when we fought.

I always thought that was so amazing of him.

You could also be asking why humans care about dogs. You don't need to be the same species to bond with another creature. The dog likes you, and it knows that the baby is your baby, so it wants to protect the baby. Plus it has grown up with humans, so it views humans as its kin, even if it realizes that we're different creatures
