When p = 0, i.e. an object with mass isn't moving, E = mc^2. But when an object is massless, m = 0, we have E = pc.

Of course. If a particle ceases to have mass, where's the energy go? That was the whole point of the Manhattan project. If you can destroy the atom, then it the energy must radiate outward. And it's a lot of energy.

That's not really how fission works though. Fission doesn't convert mass into energy, it splits heavy, unstable nuclei into smaller, lighter nuclei.

Right, my point was that fission doesn't "destroy the atom". The fact that the binding energy has mass wasn't the point.
