Maybe I'm a brainlet, but what is the significance of this mars rover? This isn't the first one that's been sent to mars, so what gives?

Why are they saying it's the first time a representative from Earth has landed on Mars? It's a rover just like the others

he probably means that they had to update the software while it was on its way to Mars which was planned anyway they just did it from home.

He said it was the first visit to this particular place, since mars has as many square miles of dry land as the earth seeing as it has no oceans there are plenty of places to land.

it has very advanced instruments to potentially detect life and also the experimental MOXIE system that were never sent to Mars before. Plus some other cool things like HD cameras.

It's just that China has been making leaps in space tech and wants to send things (and maybe even people) on Mars.
NASA needs a little propaganda to make people believe America is still great and shit.

Your timelines are wrong. The rovers already on Mars had ceased communication or gotten stuck before the others landed. Cite the years that each Rover landed and was declared out of commission, and you'll see that I'm right.

Anyway to answer your question, the area they landed was too treacherous to explore with the old way of landing with a bouncy ball
