According to some studies, the increased heart rate side effect mostly applies to people who are new to using marijuana or only use it occasionally. For people who use it regularly, this effect diminishes over time as the heart gets used to it.

This brings the question of whether using marijuana occasionally might actually be doing more damage to the heart than using it regularly.
