Linear Algebra concentration

I am so bad in Linear Algebra. I fully understand most of it. Everything comes naturally to me, but I hate actually computing anything. It is such a fucking nightmare. I always do stupid mistakes when reducing matrices, when I diagonalize something etc. I hate this stuff. How can I get better at this? I have ADHD by the way

Practice on increasingly hard problems, identify exactly where you're fucking up and then practice only that part. Also use a better tracking of whatever the calculations are.

Also are you an engineer? Usually the deeper one gets into physics and math, the less computations one carries out.

you've never done math if you're saying these things then. Math is about building theories from axioms and analytically proving the consequences of these axioms. Computational stuff is just a byproduct.

I make computation mistakes all the time myself, and I have a BA in math, but they're mostly tiny things that go unnoticed. The thing is, if you truly understand a topic, it usually contains enough information for you to go back and check your answer. Linalg is great for that btw. You diagonalized a matrix? Well when finding an eigenvector, check if your matrix has a zero determinant. And there's tons of things like that, which come from this "meta" level of understanding.

Hi anon,

I fully understand where you're coming from. Every student has had this happen to them at some point in their math studies. If it's not linear algebra, then it's multivariable calculus, or abstract algebra, or number theory, etc. Personally, I found it hard to force myself to do exercises in linear algebra when I knew I could read the proofs and follow the calculations mentally; working them out on paper always seemed tedious and unnecessary.

However, the key at this point is to stay patient with the learning process. The point at which you feel frustration with your current level of knowledge in a subject is the point where most people give up. Smaller issues in understanding (like working out the calculations and avoiding stupid mistakes) can be overcome with boring practice, but it's hard precisely because it's boring. We've all been there. We all shitpost and poke fun, but the truth is we all know that the struggle is worth it. Don't give up yet.
