Most professional acedemics should be shot. Some are actively doing very important research that will be for the betterment of science/math/mankind, but most are collecting paychecks swindling undergrads out of tens of thousands of dollars while they work on pet projects. In my education I have met maybe a half dozen professional academics I would consider barable people, let alone worth spending time with. Anybody worth a damn goes into practice/industry as soon as they have finished their education, at whatever level is appropriate for the task. somebody who spends 20+ years in academia is disconnected from reality and eventually basically retarded outside their overly specific field of study

My general rule with academic staff is:
>over 50 y/o with good field experience
Generally good but some can't be arsed.
>straight out of school themselves
50/50 between failures who couldn't get a job in their field or enthusiastic but barely knowledgeable people that will be outpaced by some of their class
>30-50 y/o even with experience
Do not expect to enjoy the class or learn anything without doing work in your own personal time.
