Roads from the ancient world were impressive, but they would still degrade over time except unlike asphalt it was not easy to repair or replace them. This is also why plastic roads are a moronic concept, asphalt is already easy to recycle and last a lot longer (plus less microplastic ejecta and having to worry about traction).
