AWS, Microsoft, Google, Ibm are releasing all sorts of quantum experiments and software.
I read in the economist a while back that many businesses are hoping to capitalize, providing the shovels for the new gold rush.

What can I actually build today though? Dont say research

Quantum computing is strictly in the research phase right now. Current devices are too noisy and too small to have any practical advantages.
It's not in the code monkey stage yet. You probably need a phd to meaningfully contribute, although perhaps if you're interested in the hardware and engineering side, a master's in some experimental physics and hands-on experience is probably sufficient.

is a cool one. Imagine being the illuminati with a divide and conquor agenda with database of everyone with the data of who are friends and enemies. One could imagine several people in the database being friends with two other people who are in fact enemies, and thus will fight the divide and conquor agenda. To minimize our propaganda costs, we ask the computer to divide that dataset in such a way that minimizes the amount of resistors

I think of it like this pic related. The wireframe is the problem a programmer makes, dipping in soap is the computation, and the soap film the solution.

its easy to take for granted, but solving the minimum surface area that spans a complex surface requires alot of cpu cycles, but here we see bubbles doing it basically for free in the blink of an eye. I imagine this as the quantum speed up. Dwave seems to be making use of quantum tunnels influencing the size of its neighbouring tunnels to aid an electrons journey too the lowest energy state, our solution. Instead of having to iterate x for every y and check etc, our x's seem to carry an inference of y, so we iterate over x in a couple sample runs and take the mean.
