why could dinosaurs be so much bigger than modern land animals? nothing even comes close to some of the giants from the past. these things would take dumps bigger than an african elephant.

Weren't oxygen levels lower post Permian?
the birdlike dinosaurs have the excuse that their respiratory systems were(are!) more efficient than ours. If they could manage not to break their bones, they could scale up better. Living in shallow ponds would help with that, like the brontosaurs did.

a lot of avian traits like hollow bones and highly developed respiratory systems, evolved in early dinosaurs and were present in the long neckers. having hollow bones and a torso comprised mainly of oxygen-filled sponge would have cut down their weight a lot. mammals are bricks compared to dinosaurs, but that also makes us more hardy.

I thought this was a theropod thing exclusively. Sauropods are so fucking different than theropods that it would be similar to comparing a crocodile to a modern bird.

Also if we ever discover aliens it's likely the Humans will be the frail childlike creatures with big eyes and not the ayyys. Earth is smaller than the average rocky planet, and we evolved at one of the lowest oxygen points since the explosion of life. Our neotenous features (lack of body hair, attraction to big eyes in sexual selection) are also unusual.
