It's a legit question, though. Do doctors really check for a novel disease if the symptoms fit another, not uncommon one? Couldn't first outbreaks thus remain hidden?

I ponder this too but the problem I have with this theory is that they never seemed to really break out. Whereas covid is hella virulent and spreads like a motherfucka. If kung flu was already here in august, there should have been a lot more people sick.

If it were actually COVID, we'd expect to see cases occur in clusters suggestive of an infectious disease. Doctors don't typically look for novel diseases. If there's a cluster of disease that looks just like pneumonia but you can't find any bacteria or virus causing it, though, public health labs (state labs and the CDC) absolutely will get very thorough to make sure.

My memory's a little hazy here, but for several states and other countries, they went back into 2019 and saw an abnormally large amount of pneumonia cases where influenza wasn't the cause.

In our state it was paraflu and metapneumovirus. Not sure about other places. But EVALI also has histological things that pneumonia doesn't. A lot of foamy pneumocytes. Since workup of suspected pneumonia usually involves culture and direct examination of the lower respiratory tract, it's very noticeable.

How common is that? My parents have each had pneumonia twice in the last two years, including two hospital stays. The doctors took x-rays and listened to the lungs, but there was never any culturing beyond the upper respiratory tract

We know COVID-19 was outside China earlier than originally suspected (before 2020), and causing illness, without being identified.

If they were hospitalized, it's likely some lower respiratory tract sample was taken. It's part of my hospital's protocol for treating pneumonia. What you remember as upper respiratory tract may actually have been lower. Sputum is considered lower respiratory tract, since you're coughing up mucus from within the lungs.

The only culture they took was a nasal swab for influenza, which was negative. After that they treated it as a bacterial infection and went with a broad spectrum antibiotic since they wanted to cover their bases. That was for my mom, who was an inpatient. For my father, they listened to his lungs, said it was community acquired pneumonia, said an x-ray wasn't even necessary because his treatment would be the same regardless and sent him home with Doxycycline and steroids. This is in Maryland. I've actually never heard of anyone giving a sputum sample for a pneumonia diagnosis here.

Hospital administrator here

We had an outbreak of pneumonia in our hospital in 2019, we cultured at that time.

After COVID hit, we did antibody studies and examined what specimens we had on file from the pneumonia still (well the state technically did that part). All negative.

They did grow standard community acquired pneumonia though. Not a schizo question, we studied it as our physicians thought it might be linked.
