It's okay guys the deadline just passed, we got it in on time!

I wrote something about these hair cells being highly sensitive to axis orientation, and that the cells in one side will hyperpolarize while the cells in the other side depolarize.

That was my best guess, 5 minutes ago, am I close?

Yeah that's pretty much the answer. It's to allow for perception of directional change in both ears at the same time with one set depolarizing and other repolarizing or rapid directional changes within one ear. If it fired at a low firing rate at baseline there would be no way to distinguish repolarization and thus directional change.
