Help me bros. I want to be a Chemist and have the enthusiasm but online courses are cancer through my Uni. Everyday I struggle to even understand 2/3rds of the content and my boomer lab professor canceled all in-person labs despite the standard requirement of PPE.

Strongly consider switching majors, even if you are passionate for the subject. Especially if you aren't getting in person lab experience, you might as well be getting a degree in black studies.

I worked in a lab, chemists with their master degree we’re getting paid $15 hour. A lot of lab directors aren’t super paid either. Felt like shit doing the work order and shipping out 15K of acids for metal testing every morning...and writing all the emails. Meeting with clients. Literally felt like I ran a pretty large portion of their operations and didn’t get shit

That's pretty bad but idk if that's representative. I got an A.S. in Chem, planned on getting my B.S. after transferring but dropped out. But I still landed a 20$/hr QC job. Which isn't great but if they're getting paid that low for a MS that's probably a really shitty job market

Do a chem degree + another degree to become more competitive. The second degree can be computer science, microbiology, genetics or some shit. I did a chem + food science degree and currently doing a good science PhD synthesizing rare fatty acids and their derivatives

Something like polymer chemistry + food science will also make you a super candidate since there's a ton of work available in packaging

I was thinking of doing for chemistry. My degree was chem and bio with some math. But I've been doing a bunch of gel analysis which I know is hot in food science

It's huge meme in this department indeed. Pretty much every food science department has at least 2 labs doing emulsions and hydrocolloids shit

Consider applying as you will immediately stand out with your chem degree/math. Most food science students are fucking stupid because they're prepped in undergrad to go work in industry rather than academia/actual science
