Considering how real dreams are it's probably all in your head.

When my gramps died I had a dream he was still alive and I argued with my mom he was supposed to be dead. She said I was probably just dreaming it. I stopped arguing and was just thinking I know he's supposed to be dead. I was just wondering what the hell was going on. Then I woke up.

Can you imagine having thoughts in your thoughts. And then your thoughts start arguing without your thoughts thoughts? That shit was so real.

The Penrose microtubule approach to conciousness might explain them. If you take your brain as some sort of antenna then certain situations might cause your body to stop recieving the signals from your conciousness and might get your thoughts or soul or whatever the fuck it is you consider "you" released into the room.
