If you work out the rules for typical matrix multiplication you'll see they correspond to composition of the linear maps they represent, also matrix addition is just addition of linear maps.

Quantum mechanics is largely based on linear algebra, yes. But I think that a good course will focus more on the theory instead of forcing you to calculate large matrices by hand
