Chemically speaking, what is the reason that hairs seem to split at the tips while the same thing doesn't happen in the middle of a strand? You can try to bend a hair in the middle but it won't cede, you barely touch the tip and there goes the bristle. What happens here on a molecular level?

not an expert, but i think it has something to do with those dragon scales in the picture, as you get closer to the end of the hair, it thins out, so the tip is probably dragon scales

Whoah, how do those even form?

I always see that women are cutting their tips, they claim the hair grows faster that way, or perhaps deteriorates slower. Does it really do something? It would be more intuitive to not cut them would it?

Age of the tip of the hair is older than the root, it's had more time to be damaged and weakened. Beyond that, it's akin to to why it's easier to make a string fray from the tips. Separation of the split ends tends to make the defect spread down the length of the hair fiber. The longer the split ends, the more likely they will experience a force that can separate them further. If you cut a split end off, there's no split ends to be pulled on.

no, not cutting hair makes it grow faster. women alway scut their hair to get rid of split ends and prevent tangles. in a way this can make hair grow faster overall if you get so many split ends and tangles that lead to further tearing splitting that you lose and tear hair faster than you grow it, but for the most part its just to get rid of split ends and tangles for beauty's sake.
