that’s not a fair assessment. Ken Wilson did a lot of important work to establish why effective field theories SHOULD be renormalized precisely because effective field theories have a limited domain of applicability by definition.

the line of thinking with dimensional regularization follows a similar logic despite its radically different character.

now, string theory claims to be a finite theory but it is known that nonperfurbatively it is really a theory of membranes but membrane theories are not renornalizable. if you want to complain about something, complain about that
