our local university and college even have a direct pipeline set up
the hate for them is actually just elitists since they are pretty comfy and have lots of different classes people can take as a one off if they want to, though this is not so important in the internet era.

I remember back in the 90s my dad took a class about geology just because he liked going on hikes and wanted to know more about what kinds of things he saw while doing it.

its changing these days though. Most large colleges have 4 year programs set up specifically for degrees like Engineering that are made to get people done with school in 4 years. This is a lot different from back in the day where engineering degrees typically took 5-6 years to complete for a bachelors. Its actually better to just go to a major university for all 4 years if you want to do something related to science, as they have flowcharts laid out that get you done as quickly as possible, with all electives and all the other shit included.

Our equivalence is Senior High School Yr11 Yr12 & 1st year university.

University degrees in faculties like Science take 3yrs, not 4.

Think of college as graduating TAFE with a diploma, which will also grant you 2nd year university entrance.

Most people can't afford to attend university at 18 years old because they do not have the money. If you do well at the community college, you can transfer to a university (typically in your state) and get a ton of scholarships that basically make university free.

Whenever I see 18-22 year olds at my university, it's usually because their parents are paying $30k+/yr for them to attend. Tons of them dropped out when their parents lost their jobs because of the corona meme.
