I think the solution to this is better reviewing. Consumer reports was very popular with boomers and was a good road map. More products means more extremely good products, and reviewing can help this. Currently internet reviews are a bit of a shitshow. Customer reviews are usually written after trying an item for the first time, and half the time most people don't know what they are talking about. Sites like rtings are very good, but there is no rtings for, say, spices. Our economics assume rational, well informed customers and making that more true can only be a good thing.

How do we get to better reviewing when it's hard to charge for information? There's little incentive to produce better reviews when you can't really monetize them.
