Neither of these friends, it was mostly sent in stories from readers mixxed with some analysis of how phd programs work, post-doc life and how universities are incentivized to churn out phds. I know it was talked about here, trying to find it in the archive

50/50 but your probably better off with a phd long term imo
you can just go for the phd and if things don't work out then just take the terminal masters

Give it to me straight. Will an engineering PhD from a prestigious university get me top tier research jobs? Will I get a return on investment for all these years in school earning little to nothing?

No, not alone. You need a hook up but the good thing about "prestigious" schools is the brand name so you will have a leg up on some other people.

Probably not. Its probably better to work and get experience first and then if the company wants to move you into a higher position they pay for your grad school. If you get a PhD, you will either be forced to do jobs that are research (which aren't always plentiful and companies don't always want to pay the premium for your PhD when they can hire a masters level engineer) or you will teach.

Isn't it always better to just go into industry, work a couple years, and then go to grad school when they pay you to?

Yeah this would be ideal but not really an option for me right now. It appears that I'm well and truly fucked.
