"Just wear SOMEthing" was about as good as we could all do while n95 production ramped up, but the damage was done. Cotton/nylon masks had become a fun fashion accessory, and now that we DO have enough n95 for everyone to be using the proper amount of protection, nobody wants to give up their swag.
So now we're at "double masking", with an actual n95 underneath your fancy matching do-nothing mask.
They can't exactly go back to "n95 is all you need", even though that is the case, because idiot fashionistas will say it clashes with their outfit and refuse to wear the shit that will actually protect them, and cheap bastards will whine about buying new masks when they already spent a bunch on ones with their favorite football team's logo on them.
