There's evidence of people living in squalor. Just look at India for instance. They drink contaminated water and breathe the most polluted air. Yet they don't all die from germs. There is so much evidence contradicting the germ theory of disease but it is discarded. I think a better hypothesis is that somehow our body is damaged in a way which allows for germs to gain a foothold. If we discover this pathway we eliminate disease.

Germs are not an inert poison. Contact with germs does not guarantee illness and it is rare for illness to actually kill someone. It depends on your body's ability to fight the infection.
