i thought he was cool initially because he’s a professor at UCSD and his interviewees include Shelly Glashow, Leonard Susskind, Cummins Vafa, a lot of really good stuff. but then he also has Garrett Lisi and Eric Weinstein and Sabine Hossenfelder? wtf? and fucking Ben Shapiro????

His whole reaction to the BICEP2 affair is deeply fucking odd. What happened is that they tried to avoid being scooped by publishing prematurely. The biggest problem is that they went straight to the media and presented it as a done deal.

And Keating's reaction to all this is to write a book about how the Nobel Prize should be reformed. It's totally fucking illogical. He didn't lose the prize, that's incredibly stupid and arrogant. In any case BICEP had 4 co-PI's, so even if it was correct they probably would not be awarded it. He's just cashing in with the book deal. Hossenfelder let him use her blog to promote the book, so I suspect that's why she made the cut.

interesting. good post anon. i don’t know the story about BICEP2 or his book. i only know him from watching the interviews he does so i missed that part. i guess what you’re saying is that he sort of got into a questionable or just unprofessional position in his research work, and his move toward writing a book and being a tuber is a move he made after ruining his reputation as a serious scientist? how did he keep his professorship? is he tenured and he keeps his job despite losing research funding?

This is not the sort of thing people lose a job or funding over. People are allowed to be wrong. The mistake is how they dealt with the media. My problem with Keating is that he takes zero responsibility for this and tries to shift to conversation to some unrelated institution (the Nobel Prize).

anyhow since you seem to know your shit on this guy—i work in physics (not cosmology or astrophysics though) and i know a lot of physics people and i scan the internet for physicists with an internet presence. aside from a few outliers like Sean Carroll and Brian Greene, there are very few people who have a.g. youtube channels. and among those, it would be completely insane to invite pseuds like Lisi and Weinstein onto your show. it would be suicide basically, because those people are fake physics more or less. but Keating has them on, plus fucking Ben Shapiro? OK, maybe he doesn’t lose his job, but at least the department head should give him a talking to or he should get a kind kick in the balls at a faculty meeting. it makes a mockery of his department that he props up pseuds and political hacks. what is going on?

his subsequent work followed after many many years (like a decade) of just shilling his debunked theory. and then, when he tried to modify it, (or rather, after he paid for enough postdocs to stay at his hawaii “research institute” resort and try to lean something ) the result was the antithesis of his initial “so beautiful” goal. he should have abandoned it if he were acting in good faith. in fact, his corner of research got a name or popularized the name “GraviGUT” and i think others have done much better work in that field since then, and apparently Garrett only reads his own papers and pays no attention to others who have tried to develop similar ideas. it all wreaks of a conartist job
