Medieval wars saved the best since the toughest and most skillful swordmen etc survived.
Gunpowder changed that. WW1 saw the highest death count in nobility for example. Bugmen survive now.

The warlike mercs, men at arms etc. rode horses and/or wore mostly heavy armor, the civilians and footmen levies wore shirts and rode diddly dick.
