Were sudden temperature changes common in the past?

I didn't pay attention when I was younger, but nowadays we see quite sudden temperature changes in France, especially in winter. It was around 15 degrees celsius in northern France yesterday, and now it suddenly dropped at -15...

People around me say that it's due to climate change, but since most people know nothing and me included, I wanted to know if it was a common thing 30, 50, 100 years in the past to have sudden changes of temperature with such amplitudes over a couple of days.
