This man raises the bigger question of why are 95% of parents such shit human beings. Why do most parents not bother to engage their children in critical thinking in the way VN's parents did?

Imagine if parents were actually mandated by law to make their children read, to sit down and stimulate their children intellectually, to actually motivate them to learn.

I suspect most parents have children because reproduction is a strong biological urge. Whereas there isn't such a strong biological urge to be """good""" parents.

I also suspect a lot of parents are quite poor, and decide that having children is their retirement plan; being fed, housed, looked after (since they can't afford a nurse or whomever).

He was born i what was/is Austro-Hungarian Empire which was one of the most powerful empires around in it's time, so it's not surprising it would breed men of his caliber, as is the case with any great power.
