How often does chemo work to shrink tumours? Is it a sure thing or what? On the websites that give advice about cancer treatments for laymen, the actual effects of chemotherapy on tumours isn't really spelled out.

Definitely not a sure thing. Essentially, tumors are rapidly growing and multiplying cells. Chemotherapy often gets in the way of this growth and dividing, sometimes by interfering with the synthesis of DNA, sometimes disrupting DNA. You can look of studies on outcomes of different types of chemo.

Depends on dosage, stage of tumor, patient's state of health, duration of treatment.
If you want to look at actual effects, then learn the mechanism of action. There are different classes of chemotherapeutic agents and not all of them work the same but most interfere with the cell cycle or DNA synthesis/function.

It does seem to be dependent on the person. This person I know had symptoms of the cancer (pain in a certain place, sickness, loss of appetite) for some weeks before chemotherapy but after starting the treatment she no longer had any of these. They seemed to go away overnight.

I don't know the regimen. It's womb cancer. She has chemotherapy once every 3 weeks for 4 times and I think a steroid pill a few times after each treatment plus another pill and an injection. I don't know what the second pill is and the injection is for white blood cells numbers. She hasn't yet finished the treatments.

Oh and she's most likely taking a platinum agent like carboplatin with a taxane like paclitaxel. Paclitaxel acts by hyperstabilizing microtubules preventing their disassembly and thus causing mitosis to stop. Carboplatin and other platinum agents crosslink DNA usually at N7 position of guanine causing an intrastrand crosslink leading to DNA synthesis and repair mechanisms from stopping. It's similar to how alkylating agents work but these use their coordinated platinum complex instead of an alkyl group

Why is it terrible? I don't know if she's had surgery. She's in her late 40s, so she could handle it physically, but I haven't got around to asking her yet if she has had it. It hasn't come up while talking to her.

Does her treatment suggest anything to you? I think she's taking it all quite well, and she has already had all the kids she wants, so I think she is able to have a pragmatic attitude to it.
