Life exists of a multitude of planets, and once its technology advances far enough, it reaches the great filter.

The great filter is the creation of a black hole. The moment it becomes unstable it becomes impossible to stop, and swallows the residing solar system and beyond.

What if the great filter is failure to invent useful fusion before using up 85% of of Uranium and hydrocarbons? The remaining 15% if fought over in terrible wars.
At current usage, 85% of oil and natgas within the top 7 miles of crust (the limit where it's still profitable) will be used up by 2060-2065, 85% of Uranium by 2085-2090 and 85% of coal by 2130. What if the zoomers grandchildren still haven't got useful fusion?

I don't buy that argument.
The paper raises the Drake equation to discuss many or few life forms. The Fermi Paradox relates to just one single civilisation that will quickly (on a geological timescale) cover the entire galaxy with this one civilisation's presence or probes. That is a very different issue.

Didn't someone create a process by which people can literally create crude oil from algae? Main reason why we're still drilling is that it's just cheaper and t he infrastructure is already there. Once it becomes more expensive I imagine people will transition to man made crude.
