The male's objective was to make sure that the female he would impregnate has good genetics. The prettier she is, the more likely she is to have good genetics.
Females followed the same principle (good looking male) until children started to become too difficult to raise alone.
Females then started to check for male traits that would be beneficial to help them raise their children. This includes the male's hunting capabilities and his emotional commitment to support her and their children.
Today women want a man that is beautiful, rich and committed to her because they are essential (except beautifulness) to raise a family.
Considering the fact that marriage, which is basically a family support "life-long" contract, was created by women, it makes quite some sense.
The problem is that male's genetics have not yet been "updated" to current society and they still encourage them to do a hit-it and quit it on young and pretty females
