Scientifically speaking,

Are all forms of exercise equally good for health or are some actually harmful?

Take running for example.
I can't remember the last time I saw someone older than 40 running. Is it because they all destroyed their joints already from all that high impact on their joints?
What's the best form of exercise for longevity, scientifically and physiologically speaking?
