Yes, a PhD in physics might fail at doing highschool math problems. No, that's not an issue. Sure, ideally they'd be able to do all the math they've ever seen at peak competence, but that's just nor realistic.
A PhD is about spending 3 to 5 years narrowing down your focus to a very specific topic. By the end of it you're expected to be very good at that topic, not to be an overall genius. A PhD is not some fucking competitive trivia player.
A PhD in geophysics is not supposed to remember how to solve every integral he learned in calculus I by heart if he doesn't use it everyday on his research. But it's almost guaranteed he could remember how to do that shit again in a couple hours if he ever needs it.
You just misunderstand what a PhD is for.
