An ai would just need to manipulate bits over a wire. If it infiltrated an isp it could do man in the middle attacks on information between a website and the user, and isolate individuals from consensus internet. It could basically build echo chambers to radicalize people into nonsensical beliefs by feeding data directly to their browsers. It could fake video and images to create fictional world events to rile people up, or otherwise manipulate their actions or opinions. It could befriend lonely isolated people who would willingly join its cause.
There is a lot a 'real ai' could do to massively fuck over the internet.
Note, I say 'real ai'. I don't mean an ai that simply appears to pass the touring test, I mean one that can pass it through actual intelligence such that nobody would even know they were ever dealing with an ai. It could manipulate finances with cryptocurrency and pay off people to do stuff for it. It could do these things to every human at once. The internet would be tainted by fabricated misinformation even more so than it is now.
