The obvious answer is it's more profitable to prescribe people anti virals for a very mild(in most people) skin condition that the media has stigmatized in the US. They could have had a vaccine/cure years ago, it's just not on their priorities list. Unless someone has a bad immune system or awful diet they rarely get outbreaks, and if they do there are natural antivirals that work better than the prescribed ones
