Cats will eat a lot of things, more than just meat. If you strictly control an animals diet (thereby introducing malnutrition), shits going to go south. Humans also can't live on an exclusive diet of cooked meat too BTW.
I also don't imagine those cats were ever treated very well. Them holding down the mom and kittens for a picture says a lot about their ability to understand animals.
