We already worked out viable fusion tech like 50 fucking years ago and it's the cleanest and highest yielding energy solution by an enormous margin. It's called PACER. You basically just explode H-bombs in an underground vat of molten salt and use the heat to run a turbine. There you go, fusion power production beyond all your wildest dreams. The nice thing about the molten salt business too is that you can put it deep in a mountain, or deep underground, and when you stop blowing up the bombs, it solidifies into a solid block trapping the radioactivity in a safe place where it will decontaminate itself over geological time scales. This shit actually fucking works, we could build it today, but sadly h-bombs are politically fucked.
