Power is the product of instantaneous voltage and current. If there’s a phase lag between max voltage and max current, then your not optimizing power output. Thus, if you have a given output impedance that causes a phase lag due to reactance, it’s best to “impedance match” the load such that it induces the opposite phase lag, thereby causing maximum voltage and maximum current to occur simultaneously, maximizing power output
