“Accommodations”

Holy fucking shit I never thought I’d hate that word so much. Half my fucking students qualify for time-and-a-half, double-time, quiet spaces, homework extensions, lab extensions, yadda yadda yadda and it’s an absolute nightmare trying to accommodate everyone’s accommodations. The students who have them and don’t need them abuse the shit out of the system because they know we can’t do shit about it. The students who have it and need it are being left with wildly unrealistic expectations for the future. And worst of all it demoralizes the hell out of the regular students who put on their hard work, get the questions right and on time, and have to watch as their classmates get 40 minutes for a quiz, two and a half hours for an exam, and four fucking hours for a final.

It’s fucking ludicrous.

Being given an exam with little time, no working together, and no access to outside knowledge is pretty far from 99% of people's experience in the wider world after university.

That feels more like a failure of the systems we use to evaluate a students understanding of a subject. Take home exams are superior in my opinion

I had this monstrously fat girl in my engie phys class last year, I'm talking 350+ lbs, who had some kind of asthma related health issue, and her accommodations included getting basically a 'get out of class free' card. At the drop of a hat she could email me and say "sorry, I'm having some asthma problems today, I can't come to lecture/lab/exam/whatever". She missed a third of the lecture, half her labs, and an exam, but the accommodations department told me - no, I have to curve my grade to accommodate her health-related absences.

What makes it worse is your single performance on this single exam on this single day can mean up to 50% of your grade for some courses, a grade that will torment you the rest of your academic life if it isnt high enough to impress someone. Fuckin sit down exams and letter grades, I am so much fucking happier and successful now, I finished college in 2007 and would never want to go back since I do really well with my own grit ande determination. The tests didn't mean SHIT in the real world outside of academia.

So is getting twice as long as your coworkers and peers to work on the same types of assignments.
So is expecting to submit written statements in place of an oral presentation.
So is demanding a private room while your coworkers share a cubicle area or a common lab space
So is not showing up to do your fucking job because you had a little bout of anxiety/depression/malaise

Just grade the exam more harshly. Design your key AFTER you see all the exams, to particularly screw over the ones you know are abusing accommodations. :)

I do agree with you from a student perspective - not feeling a time crunch and being able to take a step back and notice your retarded mistakes is very, very nice and closer to how actual work is done. From the prof perspective though, how do you control for cheating?

I'm able to do this, it just consumes sick days that I don't use otherwise because I'm a (physically) healthy young adult.

Depends on the field and the subject. Teaching pure math courses I never mind giving extensions, since it's about struggling with the problem and then getting the insight, not so much about the write-up, but for computation courses I tend to be harsher about it since the point of the course is to see how quick on your feet you are.

I'm just leaving highschool and am totally unsure of where to go academically or if I should even bother. I always have, and will, love maths and more abstract physical science but i'm not sure of what to aim for anymore. Fuck.

Why does every single statistics lecturer suck at teaching statistics?? I honestly get the impression that statisticians don't actually know math, they've just memorized tables and formulas with no understanding or intuition behind them. It doesn't matter if its IRL lecturers or people on youtube, it seems like NO ONE actually understands what the fuck is going on, they've just memorized the solution techniques but cannot explain why they work, or at best, they have no desire to.

I asked my professor if he could explain how some result was derived, and he literally couldn't. He just said "well it's because... well, it's not actually that important, we just know that it's right"

at my uni the exam counts for 100% of your grade in literally every course. All the labs, reports, projects and weekly problem sets and attendance count for literally nothing

Can't do that, because even though labs, reports, projects, weekly problem sets and attendance don't count for your grade, you still have to get it all "approved" just in order to get admitted to the exam in the first place. In order to get all this work approved, you have to produce work that would typically qualify for a B in every instance.

It's fucking outrageous.
