>Is this how Northern European phenotype of light hair & eyes came about?No. It would've started in a heterozygous carrier as one mutant copy of a gene that downregulates but doesn't completely stop melanin production to give a still black or slightly lighter phenotype. Half the carrier's children would also be carriers, none would be homozygous for light skin so the gene spreads through the population for a while without expressing. Eventually by chance two carriers will breed, of their offspring 1/4 would be normal dark skin, 1/2 would be carriers and 1/4 light skinned.
