Breeder reactors can effectively reduce waste to negligible amounts—alas not successfully becoming common after significant research and investment. RTGs can be powered with Cs137 though not as ideal as Pu238 for space probes, and there's quite some more uses that could be considered. I don't know how the extremely high price tag can be challenged though, you'd need something akin to SpaceX shaking the fiels, but nuclear is also extremely regulated and only a selected few companies can develop reactors. Maybe these small, self enclosed and passive safe new reactors with relatively low 6 figure price will move things a bit.
