The difference between EU and US regulation is basically this:

In the US once something is declared unsafe they do a couple independent research to the substance and if it's deemed damaging then it's banned.

In the EU if you want to add a substance to your product that hasn't been cleared you have to PROVE that the new chemical isn't damaging to human health and it has to be replicated by independent groups before you can add it.

The end result is that everything is basically banned in EU until it's proven to be save. In the US everything is allowed until it is proven to be damaging.

Thus the US actually progresses faster and has cheaper products but you guys are also fucking your bodies up quicker. Ass and breast sizes and earlier and earlier puberty is also something we see in the US and US-like countries (South America, philippines, Australia, Canada, UK now too etc). While countries that use the EU method (EU, Japan, taiwan etc) don't show these symptoms. Probably indicating that there is truly something going on with the food and consumer products in the US.

The thing is, most people are told in school that health is important. The problem is that the media gives the opposite message, and since school is not cool, being unhealthy is what is cool. Even if you regulate the shit out of this and that, it won't make it cool.

This is why I don't think it is necessarily a problem (altho it is in many ways) with products and their regulation. The US has a serious culture issue that views health as selfish or prudish rather than baseline mandatory for function.
