Heavier things have more momentum. If you had an object which oscillated in mass, going from light to heavy, then you could push yourself along through space by pushing on the object when it is heavy and pulling on the object when it is light.

We do have such objects: electrical capacitors are slightly more heavy when they are charged, and slightly less heavy when they are not charged. The theory behind the MEGA drive is that you can super glue a vibrator to a capacitor and time the charge/discharge of the capacitor to be perfectly in sync with its vibration in order to produce a thrust in one direction.

They don't discharge the capacitors to anywhere. Electricity is just shuttled back and forth between the piezoelectric vibrators and the capacitors. Energy is lost from the device as it heats up and the energy radiates away.

I think this technically does violate Newton's laws, it however falls within the realm of relativity.

Newton's laws don't have mass-energy equivalence and wouldn't account for charged capacitor's gaining mass due to stored energy.

All the conservation laws are drastically different in relativity.

I don't know how it's better, but it's certainly more interesting. I guess one advantage I can think of is that there is no theoretical upper limit to how much thrust you could practically produce with these things, assuming we have some fantasy-tier batteries and materials. Whereas you could not produce 1g of thrust with a photon drive without melting a hole in anything behind you

The formula says that a body at rest still has energy, which is important in relativity since otherwise the energy-momentum tensor would have a zero entry and cause no gravity in a system's rest frame. It's literally just the relativistic energy term at v=0. It does specifically not imply that there is an equivalence between energy and mass, it's a misnomer.

The rest mass of point particle doesn't change but temperature is a statistical feature of a macroscopic body which has an overall mass. You can define an average rest mass for the body that can chage with tempareature as the aggregate of the "relativistic" mass added by the moving microscopic bodies. The rest mass of the system is still just the aggregate of the individual rest masses but you have a sort of effevtive mass because macroscopically the object is not moving.

This still sounds like "magic" science. The sort of concepts which pop up every now & then regarding some miraculous discovery. There is normally a good reason why these technologies never get developed either. Normally they are either too expensive or just not practical enough for reasons outside of their initial "miracle". Maybe at some point this stuff will be practical but considering how humanity is I doubt that it will be anytime soon.

There are plenty of problems with the idea, but this is not one of them. If you negatively charge a cap then there are more electrons inside of it raising the mass. In addition, the increase of the energy of the system also raises the mass, same as for chemical compounds (they weigh slightly less than their constituents) and atoms (a proton has a mass greater than one amu because it is in a higher energy state than heaver atoms, till you get past iron where they start to gain more energy)

$E(v) = \frac{mc^2}{1-\frac{v^2}{c^2}}$
If you set v to zero, you'll get
$E(0) = mc^2$
If you insist on expressing the mass of an object by its rest _energy_, you need to do it correctly:
$m = \frac{E(0)}{c^2}$

As you can see, the mass does not increase with velocity. The expression is wrong when the body isn't at rest anymore.
