>>12651220>why did it develop?protects the fruit, Cucurbitoideae are distinct from the rest of their Cucurbitales cousins in the fact that they all grow some kind of woody defenses on the flesh of the fruit, probably related to other gourds that have wart like flesh on the fruit. its just a random mutation that worked well and propagated. There are many types of melons in the cucumis family all with very similar textured flesh.
