it is legit, i saw videos of the field trials on that monkey at first and that from the neck down paralyzed lady later. the monkey was strapped in a chair which prevented him to use his arms to feed himself, with the arm hooked up to his brain he learned quickly to grab fruits and bring them to his mouth. with the lady they were only allowed a 2 month trial, after that they had to remove the electrodes from her brain again as required by law. but in this short time she learned to control the arm so well, she could grab a glass with the robotic arm and bring it to her mouth to drink, or eat chocolate. that was quite moving. she was kinda devastated when they had to end the trials as planned. this thing was bringing her something resembling independence for the first time in years. just imagine how well someone could control that arm with more time to practice, it becomes intuitive, as if you move your own arm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h60UjIGGV4

there is a video about target practice, this is amazing, so effortlessly, and on top its a monkey for crying out loud you cant explain a monkey how to use a robot arm, just the fact that it is able to intuitively learn how to use it tells a lot about the potential of that technology.

you need electrode arrays for the brain with a higher resolution that what was already tested, the fancy thing is, the brain can learn to distinguish between the tip of your finger, and the digits, if there are just enough electrodes. it kinda works how they do auditory brainstem implants, they just plop the electrodes in the region which is responsible for hearing, after some training patients start to distinguish noises , and can pick out people talking from that noise, its nothing that works instantly, the brain has to adapt. if they manage to get their electrode density up, and the implant size down, i see no reason why they could not create a surface for a finger, with high enough touch resolution that a person could distinguish where the finger is touched. creating the right signals for the brain to interpret is another issue, as that guy from the video said, the same signal feels different on each of his fingers. from pressure to electrical fizzling.

holy crap, thats almost affordable, if this can be covered by insurance companies, it could replace expensive care personnel, or reduce the amount of time they are required to care for the person. ive seen this brain implant which allows blind people to distinguish shapes, and bright from dark surfaces, its limiting factor are the brain implants right now, they have to up the density of the needles to increase the resolution the person can perceive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AISQvV0ifYw&feature=emb_title the guy tells about his experience , how he started to see with this thing, and how his brain started to make sense of the signals on its own after a while.
