Environmental destruction isn't just because we lack other sources of energy. If you no longer have to burn fossil fuels to power the factory, you still need all the other inputs.
Plentiful energy wouldn't end poverty. Poverty is primarily caused by distribution of resources, not the sum total of resources available. That's assuming cold fusion would even provide significantly cheaper plentiful energy. Entirely possible it'll still cheaper for most the world to stick a diesel generator in a shed.
