RAM usage on huge image files

Hello.

Why would opening up an 85MB JPG image cause an image viewer take up ~350MB extra ram?

I'm pretty computer/programming literate so a short technical answer is fine.

(the image viewer does have pan/zoom/crop/etc. capabilities)

Because the image viewer isn't coded very well. If it hasn't crashed why worry about it? It works better than Firefox

jpeg is a compressed form. viewer needs to decompress the image in memory. compression scheme is based on DCT and huffman iirc, so while decompressing it should be able to send pixel data to vram frame buffer and clean up memory(assuming you have a dedicated vram and not a shared one), but probably doesn't do that. since you might manipulate the image(rotate, brighten etc.) it might need to keep the image data in the memory instead of decompressing for each manipulation.

JPGs are compressed into an algorithm. To view the jpg the algorithm is decompressed into an image. Jpgs are lossy because the final image may ne slightly different from the original source image.
