mRNA is made which codes for the surface protein of the virus, this is wrapped in phospholipids and injected. Thanks to lipids it makes its way into cells, where ribosomes find it and transcribe it, creating the foreign proteins. The mRNA quickly degrades after this.
Later, the immune system antigen-presenting cells (think your friendly neighborhood commisars) find these foreign proteins, do not recognize them, and start an immune response to make antibodies that stick to them.
mRNA vaccines are quite elegant, but have problems in expense and requirements of cryogenic temperatures to store them due to their tendency to rapidly degrade.
