It's because of the Uncertainty Principle and Pauli-exclusion principle in the quantum theory. These principles explain that 2 quantumn particles cannot exist in the same quantumn state at the same time.
We have 4 fundamental forces
Gravity (weakest)
Weak Nuclear Force
Electromagnetism
Strong Nuclear Force
The electromagnetism is 10^32 more powerful than gravity (1m vs observable universe) and prevents protons from bonding with another. The only way to break this is to give enough force equivalent if not more than the pressure at the center of the sun.
